The Tweenage Rugrats In:
"Angelica's Summer Job"

By Birch Griesse

Let's take a sneak peek into Angelica's diary.

Friday, May 31

Dear Diary,

It's me, your old pal Angelica! Sorry I haven't been writing in you for a while. I've been busy with homework and stuff. But guess what? Today was officially the last day of school! Right now, I am relaxing in my back yard, drinking lemonade, and writing in you (duh)! Now that it's Summer, I'm going to try to write in you every day!

Here is what else I plan to do this Summer:

1. Watch TV
2. Play outside
3. Swim
4. Go to camp
5. Have fun
6. Visit ocean at least once a week
7. Go to waterpark as often as possible
8. Get a tan
9. AVOID TOMMY AND FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's just a few things I do in Summer Vacation! There's so many I just can't list them all!

I am so glad school is finally out! I hate school. It's boring, hard, and I almost always get bad grades. Just about the only thing I like about school, is that I get to see my friends every day. But that's OK, because my best friend, Samantha Shane, lives just four blocks away! Well, I'm going to take a break from writing and check out all of the Summer activities that I can sign up for, like cheerleading camp.

Boy, Diary, have I got news for you! And it's bad news, too. Well, I was sitting at the table looking at all of the Summer activities when my Mom came into the kitchen and told me she and Dad wanted to talk to me. So she sat me on the couch and she and Dad sat next to me. The conversation went something like this:

Mom: Angelica we want to talk to you. (duh)

Me: (irritably) I kind of got that part.

Dad: Well, I bet you were wondering what we wanted to talk to you about. (duh again)

Me: (sarcastically) However did you know? You must be psychic!

Mom: Well your father and I were talking, and we've decided, that since you're thirteen, you're old enough to start earning you're own money. So we want you to get a summer job!

Me: (surprised) Say what!?!?!?!?

Dad: A summer job! We think it will be a great way to prepare you for life!

Me: So what will happen if I decide that I don't want to have a summer job?

Mom: Well, whether get a summer job or not, you won't be getting any allowance during the Summer. And, also, if you refuse to find a summer job, you will be neglecting your responsibilities, and acting like a little girl. And if you are going to act like a little girl, you will be treated like a little girl! That means going to bed early, not being allowed to go to the mall or anywhere else with your friends without an adult with you, etc..

So now I'm stuck working all Summer, probably at some stuffy fast food joint. Just great. I'll write some more later. I'm going to my room to sulk.

Saturday, June 1

Well, I start the interviews (for a summer job) this Monday. I might as well make the best of my weekend. I think we're having pancakes for breakfast. Maybe I'll call Samantha and see if she can come over. Wait, Mom's calling me for breakfast. Gotta go.

Well, I called Samantha. She'll be here at 1:00. It is now 9:00. I have nothing to do. I think I'll see what's on TV.

Nothing good on. I'm going to play on the computer.

Dad's on the computer. I think I'll read a book.

We don't have any good books. I'm going to take a nap.

Can't get to sleep. Mom's vacuuming, I keep hearing beeps from the computer, and my cousin Tommy and his pre-teen friends are outside yelling and shouting and having a great time. It is now 9:15. I think I'll see what Tommy and his friends are doing.

Well, believe it or not, I actually played with Tommy a little (so much for number nine of Summer To Do list)! But the game got boring after about five or ten minutes (easy come, easy go) so I just laid down on a blanket in the front yard for 2 hours. But I didn't put on enough sun screen so I got a sun burn. Samantha will be here any minute. Wait! her car just pulled into the driveway! Gotta go.

Well, Samantha and I had a great time we played at my house for two hours (with Samantha here, my house actually seems fun!), went swimming for an hour and played at the park for thirty minutes. Then Samantha had to go. I wanted her to spend the night, her parents said no! Sometimes I just don't understand parents! I'll write again tomorrow!

Sunday, June 2

Nothing exciting happened today.

Monday, June 3

Today's the day. My Summer is officially over (so to speak), my nightmare has officially begun. Today I have to go to my first job interview(s). My first interview is for a job as a waitress at MacDowell's, some dirty old fast food restaurant with disgusting, fatty, high cholesterol food (YUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!). They pay minimum wage, which is, like, $5.25 an hour or something. I am going to get a calculator and see how much I will make each week.

If I work forty hours a day, five days a week, I will have $210 by the end of the week.

Well, since I have nothing better to do, I guess I'll describe what I'm wearing. I have on a boring white T-shirt with a purple and red skirt (not a miniskirt, a full skirt). How embarrassing! And I can't believe I'm all dressed up just to go to MacDowell's! I just hope no one sees me. Hey, maybe I should wear a paper bag over my head! And when I get there I can mess up the interview! Oh, time to go to MacDowell's! Gotta Go! :-(

OK, the interview at MacDowell's went just as I planned --- bad! I also got interviewed at a bunch of other stupid places, but I managed to fail their requirements too! That's the good news. The bad news is that I think Mom and Dad are mad at me. If Dad isn't on the computer, I think I'll visit some chat rooms and e-mail some friends. Oh, better hurry! Teen Rage will be on in half and hour!

Everything has to go wrong, doesn't it? Just everything! There's still five minutes before Teen Rage is on, so I'm going to tell you what happened on the computer. First, I went to the chat rooms and chatted some. But after a while that got boring, so I got on Instant Message with Andy, my boyfriend. But somehow we got into a huge fight and now he broke up with me. I don't know what I'm so worried about! We'll probably just get back together again tomorrow. But still, I hate it when stuff like that happens! I'm going to go watch Teen Rage and try to forget about the whole thing.

Tuesday, June 4

Well, guess what? Today's my birthday! I'm having my party this weekend. I'm so glad I don't have to look for a job today! I get to just lay around the house and do basically whatever I want! So there probably won't be much to write about. I'm just telling you so you don't feel abandoned. I am going to go check my e-mail.

I an e-mail from Andy. We got back together.

Wednesday, June 5

Back to job hunting (groan). I'm wearing almost the exact same outfit I wore on Monday! Gotta go look for a job. :-(

Guess what? I never thought the day would come, but I actually found a good job! I'm going to work as a lifeguard at Aqua World! I'll get paid $250 a week! Plus, there's a lot of advantages to working at a water park! I get to go for half price, and once a month, they have a day where all of the lifeguards just go on rides and have fun! The waterpark, of course, is closed to the public on that day. I'm done writing for now! I have to call all of my friends and celebrate!

The party was pretty fun. Except my mom made me invite Tommy and his dumb pre-teen friends and Susie to. My Mom and Dad are so proud of me (that is a great advantage because a might be able to coax them into buying stuff for me)! But do you know what I found out at the party? Susie works at Aqua World too! I just hope we don't run into each other to often. I'll write about my first day at work tomorrow! Gotta go!
